100 Meter is Grand Champ

December 4, 2008 - (PRINCETON, NJ): Eugene City Brewery’s 100 Meter Ale won the Grand Champion award in the Amber/Red Ale category at the 2008 United States Beer Tasting Championships in Princeton, NJ.

Triple Jump Pale Ale and Honey Orange Wheat also won Best of the Pacific Northwest in the Pale Ale and Belgian/French Specialty categories, respectively.

Hop Heads Toast 2008 Crop at 'Tastival'

November 12, 2008 - (EUGENE, OR): Nearly 1,400 hop lovers converged on Eugene for their last chance to taste Oregon’s 2008 crop of fresh hop beers at the Eugene Fresh Hop Beer Tastival, October 25.

The event, sponsored by Eugene’s breweries, Oregon Brewers Guild and Oregon Bounty, was the last of three fresh hop beer events held throughout the state, celebrating Oregon’s hop harvest. Attendance for the second-year event was nearly double the previous year’s mark.

November 7, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Rogue’s Double Dead Guy bottle and Rogue Farms hat are losers.

At least that’s what the judges at the 24th Annual Beverage Dynamics Advertising and Promotions Awards say. The judges say the Double Dead Guy bottle is not the best new product package for 2008. But that honor also eluded Miller Brewing, Coca-Cola and Bacardi Rum. And the Rogue Farms hat is not this year’s best branded wearable. Neither are the latest duds from Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort nor The Dalmore Scotch.

So who made Rogue, Jack Daniels, Coca Cola, Miller and Bacardi look second-rate?

Rogue Nation Barley Farm Takes Root

November 4, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): The Rogue Nation Department of Agriculture has planted 122 acres of winter malting barley near Tygh Valley, Ore.

Rogue has entered into a strategic alliance with Dr. Bill McAllister to grow malting barley for Rogue Ales and Rogue Spirits. Together with Rogue Farms’ own hops from its hop yard in Independence, Ore., proprietary Pacman yeast from Wyeast Labs in Odell, Ore. and free range coastal water, Rogue will brew an all-Oregon ingredient Sesquicentennial Ale in 2009 to celebrate the state’s 150th birthday.

In addition to the 122 acres of winter barley, McAllister and neighbor Scott Laney will plant an additional 103 acres of spring malting barley. The result will be a summer harvest of nearly 500,000 pounds of barley, which will be malted at Great Western Malting.

Rogue's Distiller is a Ninja

November 3, 2008 - (PORTLAND, OR): After taming toddlers and tipplers, Melissa Heim has found her true calling tending the rum stills at the Rogue Distillery & Public House in Portland's Pearl District.

The 25-year-old Portland native is one of a few female distillers in the burgeoning American craft distilling movement. And, along with Rogue ambassador Sebbie Buhler, is a founding member of the Clear Boots Society, a nascent organization of women in the craft distilling industry patterned after the Pink Boots Society for woman craft brewers.

Last Call for Oregon’s Fresh Hop Beers

October 21, 2008 - (EUGENE, OR): Saturday is last call for this year’s crop of Oregon fresh hop beers as the Eugene brewers and Oregon Brewers Guild present 2008’s final Fresh Hop Beer “Tastival” in Eugene.

More than 20 beers, brewed with hops fresh from the farm, will be available at Ninkasi Brewing, 272 Van Buren St. from noon to 9 p.m. Oct. 25.

Rogue Nation Continues New Expansion, Plants Its Flag in Nine Countries

October 20, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Ex-pats and locals alike can now order up a bottle of Rogue Ale in Australia, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago. The countries may be new to Rogue, but selling abroad isn’t: the Newport, Oregon based craft brewery has been exporting its lineup of ales for years, beginning in Japan in 1993. Since then, it has expanded to Canada (Albera, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec), England, Guam, the Philippines, Sweden, and most recently, the People’s Republic of China.

Dry Hopped Saint Rogue Red Leads Three-Medal Charge at GABF

October 14, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Rogue Ales’ Dry-hopped Saint Rogue Red claimed the title of America’s best red ale, leading a three-medal finish for Rogue at the 27th Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colo.

Dry-hopped Saint Rogue Red, first brewed in 1989 for famous Seattle ale-house Latona Pub, won the gold medal in the American-style Amber/Red Ale category, topping a field of 65 entries. Rogue’s American Amber won the bronze medal in the same category.

Hazelnut Brown Nectar won the silver medal in the Specialty Beer Category.

Next Generation of Distillers Shine at GADF

October 14, 2008 - (PORTLAND, OR): Nearly 1,300 spirits enthusiasts sampled the finest creations of America’s new breed of craft distillers at the 4th Annual Great American Distillers Festival held Aug. 23 and 24 in Portland, the Mecca of craft distilling.

Nearly 30 craft distillers – from as close as right around the corner to as far away as Freeport, Maine—brought their tastiest vodkas, rums, gins, whiskeys, brandies and other spirits for two days of sampling, seminars and informal interaction with the distillers at the historic Gerding Theater in the Pearl District. More than 50 micro-distilled products were available.

Rogue Harvests Independence Hop Ale

September 30, 2008 - (INDEPENDENCE, OR): It’s harvest time in the Rogue Nation. The Rogue Department of Agriculture and Rogue Ales Brewery announce the release of Independence Hop Ale, the first beer brewed with hops from Rogue Farms’ hop yard in Independence, Ore., once called the “hop capital of the world.”

A limited release fresh-hop beer, Independence Hop Ale was brewed in two 50-barrel batches, following the harvest cycle of the hops. The first batch was brewed with 500 pounds of fresh, unkilned Centennial hops. The second was brewed a week later with 750 pounds of wet Cascade hops picked, stuffed into sacks, driven 77 miles to Newport and tossed in the brew kettle before they had a chance to start drying. After fermentation, the two batches were blended together. The result is a light copper-colored, unfiltered ale marrying the two distinctive hop characters of each batch.

Rogue Nation names official Bird

September 12, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Today the Turkey has been named the official bird of the Rogue Nation. To commemorate this momentous occasion Rogue Juniper Pale Ale has been dedicated to “the turkey in each of us.” An axe and the dedication have been added to the serigraphed 22oz bottles and Juniper Pale Ale tap stickers.

The Pilgrims were ale drinkers and most likely enjoyed beer at the first Thanksgiving. According to the Nation’s Department of Agriculture turkey is not just for the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s table but is honored daily by consumption. Even if some do not eat turkey the bottle is a perfect gift for their turkey friends.

Dogs Rule at 2nd Annual Brewer's Memorial Ale Fest

June 27, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): The 2nd Annual Brewer’s Memorial Ale Fest was held on May 16-17th in Newport, OR and benefited Oregon Humane Societies. 3,200 people with 471 of their best friends attended the festival created in memory of Brewer, the faithful companion of Rogue Brewmaster John Maier, who passed away on May 20th, 2006. Brewer grew up in the brewery and eventually rose to the rank of CEO of Rogue Ales.

The dog-friendly brew festival was held inside the Rogue Ales Brewery and included Doggy Musical Chairs, Dog Wash (pictured below), Dog Dancing, and Celebrity dog look-a-likes (Rin-Tin-Tin, Lassie, Benjy, and of course, Brewer).

A premier pour of Brewer’s Ale 2008 (pictured right) and debut of 750ml ceramic bottle complete with dog tags was a highlight at the event.

June 10, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Rogue Ales’ Dead Guy Ale was awarded a Gold medal (91) at the World Beer Championships in Chicago. Track Town Runs Faster and Jumps Higher

June 6, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): In honor of the Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR (June 27—July 6), brewmaster Trevor Howard of Eugene City Brewery has created two new beers for the Track Town lineup: 200 Meter IPA and Triple Jump Pale Ale.

200 Meter IPA is a true Northwest IPA. Light and golden, almost orange in color, with a primary focus on hop flavor and aroma. 200 Meter is brewed with 8 ingredients: Horizon, Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe hops and balanced with Northwest Pale and Munich malts, Free Range Coastal Water and Top Fermenting Pacman Yeast. 16 degrees Plato, 90 IBU, 75 AA, 6 degrees Lovibond.

Triple Jump Pale Ale is a classic pale ale. Light copper in color this refreshing Ale focuses on hop flavor with a slight malt presence in the background. Triple Jump is brewed with 8 ingredients: Horizon, Amarillo and Crystal Hops and Pale, Munich and Crystal malts, Free Range Coastal Water and Top Fermenting Pacman Yeast. 13.5 degrees Plato, 55 IBU, 75 AA, 8 degrees Lovibond.

Rogue Nation Grows its Own

May 22, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): The Rogue Nation’s Department of Agriculture has entered into a strategic alliance with Heritage Hop Growers, the Coleman Family.

The Rogue Hop Farm is on the Willamette River, south of Independence, Oregon on the former John Haas Alluvial Hop Farm. Four varieties are now being planted on 22 acres with an initial harvest in 2009. The four varieties are Perle, Sterling, Horizon, and Centennial. The hops will be processed and baled on the farm.

In 2009 Rogue will create an all Oregon product using Oregon hops and malt from their farms, yeast from Wyeast in Hood River, and Oregon Free Range Coastal Water, in commemoration of Oregon’s 150th Birthday.

In 2008 a fresh hop beer will be available from the farm. The Rogue Nation Postal Service will issue a commemorative stamp marking the occasion.

Rogue Goes to the Dawg

May 15, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Rogue Ales is honoring their revered Chairman, Brewer the Brewdawg, with his own beer, Brewer’s Ale. Brewer was the black lab and best friend of Rogue Brewmaster John Maier for 13 years prior to passing away on May 20, 2006.

The debut of the ceramic 750ml Brewer’s Ale bottle will be held May 17th in Newport, OR at the 2nd Annual Brewer’s Memorial Ale Fest, the largest dog-friendly beer fest in the world. Proceeds from Brewer’s Memorial Ale Fest will benefit local animal charities like Oregon Coast Therapy Animals and the Central Oregon Coast Humane Society.

Rogue is 3-Time Grand Champion at the U.S. Beer Tasting Championships

April 9, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Rogue Ales was named Grand Champion in three categories at the 2008 United States Beer Tasting Championships held in Princeton, NJ. Rogue was also recognized as the best in the Pacific Northwest region in five categories.

Rogue’s Old Crustacean Barleywine, Hazelnut Brown Nectar, and Mocha Porter were named Grand Champions in the Barleywine, Brown Ale, and Porter categories respectively. All three were also awarded the title of Pacific Northwest Champions.

Rogue’s XS Imperial India Pale Ale and Imperial Stout were also awarded the title of Pacific Northwest Champions in the Imperial IPA/Red Ale and Imperial Stout categories respectively.

Rogue Gets Spicy for Cinco de Mayo

April 3, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Rogue’s Chipotle Ale is Brewmaster John Maier’s salute to Mexico. John added smoked Jalapeño peppers (called Chipotle peppers) to his brew and balanced the spicy flavor with a good helping of hops. The recipe was inspired by Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with ale. Chipotle’s smokiness is a perfect complement to Bar-B-Que, and its spiciness is a nice contrast to milder fare.

During the Migratory Bird Festival, avid birdwatchers gather to view thousands of migratory birds as they rest and feed in Oregon’s high desert. The festival also includes work shops, an art show, and bird watching tours in the Malheur refuge such as “Owl Prowl” and “If Llamas could Fly.”

Rogue Ales Stouts Win Triple Gold at World Beer Championships

March 18, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Rogue Ales was awarded three Gold medals and one Silver medal at the 2008 World Beer Championships in the Stout and Porter judging.

Russian Imperial Stout scored 93 in the Imperial Stout Category, also receiving gold were North Coast, Samuel Smith’s and Deschutes. Both Chocolate Stout and Shakespeare Stout were the top ranked beers in their categories! Chocolate Stout scored 92 in the Flavored Stout Category and Shakespeare Stout scored 91 in the Oatmeal Stout category followed by McAuslan and Samuel Smith, both scoring 89.

Rogue Mocha Porter scored 89 and took the silver medal in the Flavored Porter category. Issaquah Brewery’s Smoked Frog Porter was awarded Gold and named the best porter in this category.

Rogue Warrior Deployed to Oregon

Smoked Frog Voted Best in Show!

February 29, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): The 2007 World Beer Championships results have brought much pride to the Issaquah Brewery as the Issaquah Smoked Frog scored a 94 and took home a Gold Medal in the Flavored Porter category. This medal marks the 17th award received by the Issaquah Brewery. Other breweries awarded in the Porter category were Maui Brewing (91), Rogue Ales (89), Boston Beer (87) and Kona Brewing (85).

Rogue Ales honored by Northwest Brewing News Readers Choice Awards!

February 29, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Rogue Dead Guy Ale was named best Bock/Dopplebock, with Dopplebock from Sudwerk in Davis, California as runner up. Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar tied with Kodiak Nut Brown by Midnight Sun Brewing for Best Brown Ale and Rogue was awarded runner up for Shakespeare Stout and Old Crustacean in the Stout and Barleywine categories respectively.

Dead Guy Appearing in Basements & Garages Nationwide!

February 19, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): Brewcraft USA, a nationwide distributor of brewing equipment and ingredients began distributing a Rogue Dead Guy Ale Homebrew kit on January 23, 2008. The Dead Guy kit is the first beer kit for homebrewers that was cooperatively developed and branded by a U.S. craft brewer. The kit has been test brewed by the Cascade Brewers Society and given the official blessing of Rogue Brewmaster John Maier.

Rogue Jazz Guy Ale Goes on Tour

February 15, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): The 2008 Jazz Guy Ale limited edition bottles will premier in conjunction with the Portland Jazz Festival. Rogue has been a proud sponsor of the Portland Jazz Festival and for the past three years has created a custom bottle. A portion of the proceeds from the Jazz Guy Ale bottle will be donated to the Portland Jazz Festival.

This year Rogue Jazz Guy Ale will go on tour. Where better to release it than at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the largest Jazz fest in the country, on April 25th! A delicate roasted malt accent, generous use of hops and a smooth finish. It is created using Northwest Harrington Klages, 95-115 and 315-165 Crystal Malts, Kent Golding and Cascade Hops.

American White Rum Wins Platinum

January 25, 2008 - (NEWPORT, OR): The World Beverage Competition held in Geneva, Switzerland announced its Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze award winners.

Rogue Spirits won the Platinum medal in the White Rum category. The judges commented, "Watch out Caribbean Rums." Rogue Spirits also received the Bronze medal in the Dark Rum category and another Bronze in the Flavored Rum category for their Hazelnut Spice Rum. Rogue Spruce Gin received the Silver medal in the Gin category.

Rogue Spirits Wins Critical Acclaim

November 28, 2007 - (NEWPORT, OR): Dark Rum was awarded a Double Gold medal by the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a Bronze medal by the International Review of Spirits and a Bronze medal by the International Cane Spirits Competition.

Hazelnut Spice Rum was awarded a Gold medal and the title “Best of Show” by the American Distilling Institute Rum Competition, a Bronze medal by the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a Bronze medal by the International Review of Spirits and a Silver medal by the International Spirits Competition.

White Rum was awarded a Silver medal by the International Review of Spirits.

Brewers Association Reports Surge in Craft Beer Growth

September 14, 2007 - (BOULDER, CO): The Brewers Association, the trade association that tabulates industry data for craft brewers, reports craft beer sales and growth continue to break records. The volume of craft beer sold in the first half of 2007 rose 11% compared to this same period in 2006 and dollar growth increased 14%. For the first time ever craft beer has exceeded more than a 5% dollar share of total beer sales. Overall, the U.S. beer industry sold one million more barrels in the first half of 2007 compared to 2006, with 400,000 of these new barrels produced by craft breweries. This equates to 3.768 million barrels of craft beer sold in the first two quarters of 2007 compared to 3.368 million barrels sold in the first half of 2006.
