Report Graffiti and Help Us Clean Up the Pearl District

In an effort to keep our fair city clean, Rogue Ales has joined forces with the Pearl District Neighborhood Association to stamp out graffiti in our neighborhood.  Rogue has adopted two city blocks in the Pearl District of Northwest Portland:  13th to 14th Streets between Flanders and Glisan and 10th and 11th Streets between Davis and Everett.  The Rogue Leverage Energy Marketing Department just returned from our first field reconnaissance mission:  peeling stickers, polishing meters, and scrubbing signs.

The act of liberating our city free of graffiti was so rewarding for us here at Rogue that we want to share the experience with others.  Just like Tom Sawyer made fence painting fun, we here at Rogue know how to clean up the streets in style.  Come join us every Tuesday afternoon at 1 PM, rain or shine, as we take back the Pearl, washing our streets and buildings free of graffiti.  Join us after the cleanup for a free ale tasting as well as a tour of our distillery at the Flanders Street Public House and Distillery.  Be sure to sport your Roguewear for the cleanup.  Don’t own any???  Well we’ve got plenty of ways to Rogue you up; all you have to do is show up.

This just in… Graffiti Cleanup After Dark!!!  Starting October 26th at 5 PM, Rogue will host our first nighttime graffiti cleanup.  Meet us at the Flanders Street Public House to get your official Rogue cleaning supplies and glow in the dark goodies.  Be the first kid on the block to clean up after dark.

Captain Sig Leaves Deadliest Catch

http://www.tvsquad.com/2010/09/29/three-deadliest-catch-stars-abandon-ship/?icid=main|main|dl2|sec3_lnk3|174086

There is no truth to the rumor that Rogue will abandon Captain Sig Hansen’s ship and cease making Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale.  Sig is a Rogue to the core and the beer will live on.  We have also renounced the Deadliest Catch’s designation as the official reality show of the Rogue Nation.

Fishermen’s Wives, Wild Seafood, and Crabby Beer

Newport, OR September 14, 2010–The Newport Wild Seafood Weekend was held Septemeber 11 and 12 in celebration of the Northwest’s wild-caught seafood industry and the men and women who make it thrive and sustainable. The event was organized by Newport Fishermen’s Wives and sponsored by Rogue Ales, along with Fred Meyer, Newport Newstimes, Seafood Oregon, and Oregon Coast Bank.

At the festival the public purchased seafood direct from fishermen and vendors and more than 500 people attened the third annual Great Newport Wild Seafood Cook-Off. Cook-off winners included: Team Hana from Portland, OR, and Newport locals: M.Y. Fisheries, Team Dungee, and Rock n’ Roll. Festival events also included the third annual Great Newport Wild Seafood Cook-Off, a wild seafood brunch and Wild Seafood Auction where the bid on fresh wild Seafood.

Newport Fishermen’s Wives, Inc. is a non-profit organization made up of fishermen’s wives, mothers, daughters and friends, supporting a strong sense of community helping to further the causes of industry, safety, seafood education and family support. The 30-year-old organization will dedicate all proceeds from the Newport Wild Seafood Weekend to the Fishermen’s Wives’ Fishing Families Relief Fund.

In addition to sponsoring the event, Rogue Ales hosted a beer garden and served a special brew, Crab Porter, brewed with Oregon Dungeness Crab, to thirsty seafood fans. The Crab Porter keg was tapped at a premier pour event at Rogue’s Bayfront Pub. In attendance were Newport mayor, Mark McConnell, Assistant Director of Oregon’s Dungeness Crab Commission, Hugh Link and more than 100 fans of seafood and Rogue.

Rogue’s link to Newport Oregon – and seafood – goes back to 1989 when the Rogue Brewery moved from a basement in Ashland, OR to a garage in Newport. Founder Jack Joyce had a chance meeting with Mohave Neimi of the famous Mo’s Clam Chowder restaurants. She took him to the original Mo’s restaurant, gave him a bowl of hot clam chowder, and proposed that the Rogue Brewery move to a
garage in the building she owned. She offered the space at a very generous price, under the  tipulation that Rogue “feed the fisherman” meaning that Rogue give back to the local community.

Crab Sacrifices own Life for Beer

Eugene, Oregon –In celebration of the Wild Sea Food Weekend in Newport, OR (September 11,12), and Rogue’s roots in the Dungeness crab capital of the world, Nate Sampson, head brewer at allied brewery Track Town Ales brewed a Crab Porter from Dungeness Crab.

Eyes turned misty as two crab met their fate in the mashtun at Track Town Ales. Hours later six more crab lost their lives in the hop back. Hot wort ran over the crab into the hop back then through the chiller and into fermenter. “Some may find this process cruel or unusual,” says Sampson, “but the result is a delicious and unique porter that pairs nicely with shell fish.”

Dungeness Crab Porter will premiere Friday, September 10, 5:00 p.m., with a special pour at Rogue’s Bayfront Pub in Newport. This is the newest in a series of Rogue Ales that honor Rogue’s connection to the fishing community. Others include Roe Ale from Issaquah Brewery in Washington, Old Crustacean Barleywine, and Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale.

One Tons of Hops

INDEPENDENCE, OR, August 23, 2010 — Rogue Ales has begun our annual harvest of GYO Certified hops from the Rogue Farms Micro Hopyard in Oregon’s Wigrich Appellation. We honor our cultivation, growth, and harvest by using 5 different varieties and 2,200lbs of fresh hops from our 42-acre farm to create this year’s Chatoe Rogue Wet Hop Ale.

Like any farmer sowing seed in soil, the success of our hops lies a great deal in the hands of Mother Nature. Master Brewer John Maier had planned to add a sixth variety to the brew, but our Alluvial Hops did not produce this year.

After being cut from the trellises, the hop cones are separated and loaded into 250lb burlap sacks, driven 77 miles to the Brewery in Newport, OR, and immediately pitched into the brew kettle. Total elapse time: approximately 2 hours, 17 minutes.

Due to the massive quantity of wet hops used in the brewing process we create three small batches, and then blend them to form our Wet Hop Ale.

  • Batch One August 23: 250lbs of Revolution Hops and 250lbs of Liberty Hops
  • Batch Two August 24: 500lbs of Freedom Hops and 250lbs of Independence Hops
  • Batch Three August 26: 1,000lbs of Rebel Hops

Wet Hop Ale is brewed with 11 ingredients: Carawheat, Carafoam, and Rogue Micro Barley Farm DareTM & RiskTM Malts; Rogue Micro Hopyard first growth Freedom, Revolution,
Independent, Rebel, & Liberty Hops; Pacman Yeast & Free Range Coastal Water.

Wet Hop Ale will be available in select markets on October 1st, 2010. Rogue remains dedicated to saving the terroir of Oregon hops and barley, one acre at a time, by growing our own.

For more information on ChatoenRogue releases, Tasting Room hours, Hopyard tours, or overnight stays at the Hop ‘n Bed, please contact the Rogue Department of Agriculture at 503.241.3800.
