Crab Sacrifices own Life for Beer

Eugene, Oregon –In celebration of the Wild Sea Food Weekend in Newport, OR (September 11,12), and Rogue’s roots in the Dungeness crab capital of the world, Nate Sampson, head brewer at allied brewery Track Town Ales brewed a Crab Porter from Dungeness Crab.

Eyes turned misty as two crab met their fate in the mashtun at Track Town Ales. Hours later six more crab lost their lives in the hop back. Hot wort ran over the crab into the hop back then through the chiller and into fermenter. “Some may find this process cruel or unusual,” says Sampson, “but the result is a delicious and unique porter that pairs nicely with shell fish.”

Dungeness Crab Porter will premiere Friday, September 10, 5:00 p.m., with a special pour at Rogue’s Bayfront Pub in Newport. This is the newest in a series of Rogue Ales that honor Rogue’s connection to the fishing community. Others include Roe Ale from Issaquah Brewery in Washington, Old Crustacean Barleywine, and Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale.
