Newport, OR June 19th, 2012 – Columbus may have discovered America but Brewmaster John Maier has discovered a new wild yeast that was developed from his old growth beard.
In cooperation with White Labs, samples were collected from Rogue’s hopyard and sent to White Labs for culture and testing. Sadly all three samples proved incapable of producing a yeast suitable for brewing.
As a joke, nine beard follicles were carefully cut from the beard of Rogue Brewmaster John Maier. The follicles were placed in a petri dish and sent in for testing.
To the shock of the experts at White Labs, the beard samples had produced a yeast strain that was perfect for use in brewing. Additional testing was conducted and confirmed that the yeast strain was not Rogue’s yeast. White Labs’ Chris White said “we were shocked and thrilled with this remarkable discovery.
John has been growing his beard continuously since 1978 and he has claimed that he will never cut it off. When told of the discovery, John said simply “it was in front of me the whole time and it only took two centuries and five decades to grow.”
The beard yeast is currently being used in test brews to determine the perfect style & yeast combination. The beard beer, New Crustacean, will be released in early 2013. Rogue Ales and Spirits is dedicated to saving the terroir of Oregon hops, barley and rye, by growing our own, one acre at a time.

PORTLAND, OR, May 31, 2012 – Rogue Ales has been selected as one of only 24 breweries from around the world to participate in the inaugural Pints for Prostates Portland Pale Ale Invitational. The event will be held on July 25 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland, Ore.
“Our goal was to create an event to celebrate the allure, complexity and flavors of pale ale, while raising awareness about an important men’s health issue,” said Rick Lyke, a drinks journalist and prostate cancer survivor. Lyke founded Pints for Prostates in 2008 after successful prostate cancer surgery.
Presented by Beer West magazine in conjunction with the Oregon Brewers Festival, the event benefits the Pints for Prostates campaign, which reaches men through the universal language of beer with a message about the importance of early detection.
Rogue Ales will be presenting Chatoe Rogue Single Malt Ale, a pale ale brewed with Oregon hops and barley grown on Rogue’s own Hopyard and Barley Farm. From seed to bottle, Single Malt Ale is 100% Oregon, 100% Rogue.
Tickets for the Portland Pale Ale Invitational are $30 and are available online at www.pintsforprostates.org . All net proceeds support the mission of the Pints for Prostates campaign. Only 500 tickets for this special event will be sold.

NEWPORT, OR, (April 26, 2012) – How far would you walk for a dog? Or a cat? For Rogue Nation Ambassador Leah Hansen and her dad Mike, the answer is 600 miles. This week, they set off from Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho on a 207 hour, 29 minute hike to Newport, Oregon – The hometown of Rogue Ales and Spirits.
The Hansen’s journey is a fund-raiser for Help Every Little Paw (HELP), a non-profit that pays for veterinary services, low cost spay and neuter programs, and provides food for companion animals in need. HELP hopes to raise $20,000, which will keep hundreds of pets in their loving homes and out of the pound or animal shelters.
The 600-mile route meanders through some of the most scenic places of the Pacific Northwest, including cities like Spokane and Portland, and small towns such as Ritzville, Eltopia and Mabton. Where they can’t find hotels, the Hansens will spend the night in the homes of friends, a trailer, and even a barn.
You can follow the Hansens on their journey through HELP’s Facebook page and can donate on HELP’s website.
Leah and Mike plan to arrive in Newport on Friday, May 18th, the first day of the 6th Annual Brewer’s Memorial Ale Fest. Held inside the Rogue Brewery, BMAF raises money for animal groups on the Central Oregon Coast. Leah has organized BMAF’s doggie Olympics for two years. And Rogue is pleased to support her and Mike on their walk with a donation of $2,500.
